Awards Received by HHMI Undergraduate Research Fellows

National Awards

 

Fulbright Scholarship - is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” With this goal as a starting point, the Fulbright Program has provided almost 300,000 participants—chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

 

Gates-Cambridge Scholarship - are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. The program aims to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others.


Gates Millenium Scholarship - provides outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education, in all discipline areas and a graduate education for those students pursuing studies in mathematics, science, engineering, education, or library science. The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for thousands of outstanding students with significant financial need to reach their fullest potential. (1000 scholars are selected each year)


Goldwater Scholarship - up to $7,500 for the junior and senior year for students in math, science, and engineering.  Only 309 students in the nation will receive this award each year.     


Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship - provides up to $50,000 a year for graduate study.  Only 50 students in the nation receive this award each year.

 

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship - provides a $30,500 stipend plus tuition and fees for three years of study and research leading to doctoral degrees in mathematical, physical, biological, ocean, and engineering sciences.

 

National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship - provides a $30,000 stipend plus tuition and fees for three years of support for students pursuing graduate degrees in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, and behavioral and social sciences.



USA Education/USA Funds Scholarship recipients - USA Funds®, the nation's largest student loan guarantor, and USA Education, Inc.SM, the nation's leading provider of education funding, will jointly award 1,000 scholarships of $1,500 each to deserving college-bound students nationwide.  They seek to assist students in financial need-particularly those who are either members of ethnic minority groups or are physically disabled-as they finance their higher education.

Regional awards

 
American Society of Plant Biologists, Mid-Atlantic Section Annual Meeting Marsho Award for Best Student Presentation-Student presentations are judged in competition for the Marsho Award, in remembrance of the late Tom Marsho, and winners receive full access to the Society's two journals, The Plant Cell and Plant Physiology.

College Chemistry Achievement Award for the Chemical Society of Washington- awarded to outstanding seniors majoring in Chemistry at each of the area 4-year colleges and universities. Each awardee received a framed ACS Certificate of the Award, the recent edition of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, and a complimentary meal.


Campus awards

 
ACS Analytical Chemistry Award- This award is given to an outstanding Analytical Chemistry student. The recipient receives a one year subscription to Analytical Chemistry.

Alpha Chi Sigma Award - for distinguished scholastic achievement, originality and breadth of interest in chemistry

CRC Freshman award- The CRC Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award is given to a top student in the freshman chemistry program. The award consists of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics with a commemorative scroll mounted on the inside front cover.


Invention of the Year, Life Sciences

Merck Index Award- provides a copy of the Merck Index to one or two outstanding senior chemistry majors each year. The department selects the recipients on the basis of the quality of their work in chemistry. Preference is given to students who are in the honors program or have done research in chemistry.

Nathan Drake Award- Alpha Chi Sigma Nathan Drake Award for Outstanding Sophomore  


Oswald Prize- awarded by the 18th Annual Professional Writing Program (PWP) Writing Contest and recognizes excellent writing in UM professional writing courses.


P. Arne Hansen Memorial Award- Best student honors thesis in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics


Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar - The award recognizes academic excellence of selected students and the importance of the K-12 teachers and University of Maryland faculty whom the students themselves have selected.


Undergraduate Researcher of the Year- presented by the Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research. The winner is profiled on the university’s website.


Cory Scholarship- The scholarship fund provides $1,000 toward tuition remission for two students each semester.

Isidore and Annie Adler Scholarship- established in 1991 by Annie H. Adler, in memory of her husband, Izzy, a former Professor of Chemistry. Provides scholarships for undergraduates in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
