The University of Maryland implements innovative programs to improve undergraduate education in the sciences. 

Funding for these efforts comes from a variety of sources. Since 1992, the University of Maryland has received more than $9 million in grant funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to improve undergraduate education in the biological sciences. The latest grant, for $1.2 million, supports the development of BioFIRE, a living and learning program tied to a first-year research experience.
